English Language Instructor at Al-Quds Bard College

Fall 2026 marking its eighteenth year of operation, Al-Quds Bard College for Arts and Sciences (AQB) is an innovative program introducing a liberal arts undergraduate education to the West Bank, with an enrollment of approximately 300 undergraduate and graduate students in 2024-2025.

The undergraduate program at AQB is rigorous, culminating in a two-semester independent senior project, which is generally a demanding research paper of 45 pages or more. The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program requires an equal amount of advanced study in the elected academic discipline (Mathematics, Biology, English, History, or Sciences), and in key education courses that challenge in-service teachers to apply the results of research and pedagogical analysis to the actual work of teaching.

Each year, about one third of the students enter their undergraduate programs through AQB’s English Language programs, where they not only gain academic language skills, but also the necessary critical thinking and self-efficacy required to succeed at AQB.

The EFL programs at AQB continually evolve to meet students’ needs.

1. Since the 2020-2021 academic year, two programs have met students' needs and level: the Pylon (intermediate) and Academy (pre-intermediate).


2. Beginning in 2024-25, students in both EFL programs earn college credit, a first in Palestine.

To continue to meet students’ growing needs, for the 2026-27 academic year, we seek a full- time English Language Instructor for our EFL programs, starting in August of 2026.

Evidence of successful EFL teaching experience, a commitment to innovation in programs of English for academic purposes (EAP), and empathy to honor students’ humanity are three essential factors we care about as a team.

The instructor will teach and help further develop our current Academy and Pylon English preparatory courses, and the instructor will be especially instrumental in the direction and implementation of both EFL programs:

1. The Pylon program supports students whose initial English proficiency is at the A2-B1 (intermediate) level. The course load includes English courses and two (2) full-credit elective courses each semester.

2. The Academy is a generous scholarship program dedicated to academically brilliant but economically disadvantaged students who enter the program at the A1-2 (pre- intermediate) level. The course load includes English courses and one (1) full-credit elective course each semester.

The preferred candidate will have teaching methods that are student-centered and involve students in active discussion and group tasks to develop their reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills in English. The position will also offer opportunities for professional development and engagement through the College, the Bard network, and through regional and internationally- affiliated TESOL events.

Essential Job Duties:

● Teaches up to 15 contact hours per week
● Provides appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments
● Holds office hours
● Attends faculty and department meetings as needed
● Helps develop ongoing monitoring, assessment, and curriculum of the EFL programs
● Leads or facilitates mutually-agreed upon college-level projects to improve English language skills beyond the division.
● May contribute to the development of the English program at AQB Prep, including curriculum support, teacher mentoring, classroom observation, and student assessment.

Minimum Qualifications: (all)
● Master's degree in TESOL, English, Applied Linguistics, or a related field from an accredited university AND two or more years of relevant teaching experience
● Enthusiasm for the mission of the College to provide student-centered and communicative language teaching, foster critical thinking, and incorporate writing into every class
● Fluent written and spoken English

Preferred Qualifications:
● Experience teaching in university-level English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs
● Willingness to adopt a “learner’s mindset” to incorporate trauma-informed (a.k.a “healing- centered”) teaching into daily practice
● Previous cultural experience working with Arabic-speaking cultures

Full-time faculty at AQB are expected to be on campus for the major part of at least four days per week, with a fifth day required on occasion to accommodate academic obligations. In the event that the University determines a need to shift to remote or hybrid instruction, faculty are expected to continue fulfilling all teaching and professional responsibilities through the designated formats.
