Research on the Impact of Hackathons and Competitions on the Learning Process
About GSG/Mercy Corps
Gaza Sky Geeks, established in 2011 by Mercy Corps with support from Google, is Palestine’s leading tech hub that trains, nurtures, and supports emerging tech talent with the goal of creating a sustainable and inclusive digital job market in Palestine.
Objective
The objective of this research is to assess how hackathons and competitions affect the learning process of GSG community members, identifying both the benefits and potential drawbacks, and providing evidence-based recommendations for improving program design and delivery.
Key Research Questions
The research should address (but not be limited to) the following questions:
How do hackathons and competitions influence participants’ technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and collaboration skills?
Do these events lead to long-term skill retention and application, or are the gains
short-lived?
What emotional and motivational effects do hackathons have on participants (e.g.,
confidence, stress, sense of belonging)?
Are there differences in impact between beginners and experienced participants?
What challenges or barriers reduce the learning benefits of these events, particularly
in the Gaza context?
What program design improvements could maximize positive learning outcomes and
minimize negative effects?
