Consultant - Trauma-informed Approaches in Conflict-Affected Context (East Jerusalem)
Background
Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) is a UK-registered charity that has been reaching out to the Palestinian communities, striving to deliver health and medical care to those worst affected by conflict, occupation, and displacement. MAP provides immediate medical aid to those in need at times of crisis, while also developing local capacity and skills to ensure the long-term development of the Palestinian healthcare system. MAP’s vision is of a future in which all Palestinians can access an effective, sustainable, and locally led system of healthcare and the full realization of their rights to health and dignity.
As part of MAP’s capacity building efforts for our local partners, MAP wishes to work with an experienced and professional consultant to support our local partner organization in Trauma-informed Approaches in Conflict-Affected Situations.
Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) works in partnership with local organizations to strengthen community health and wellbeing, particularly in times of crisis. MAP’s community-based partner, Spafford Association aiming at enhancing accessibility to safe and supportive spaces for vulnerable children and their families in East Jerusalem by implementing an integrated program comprising remedial education, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support services, and capacity-building activities.
About the Partner
The Spafford Children’s Center (SCC), a non-governmental organization situated in the Old City of Jerusalem, has been dedicated to the well-being of children and their families since its establishment in 1925. Over the years, SCC has adapted its services to meet the evolving needs of Palestinian society. Currently, SCC operates a robust psychological and educational support program, encompassing speech and play therapy, social work services, and various therapeutic and creative initiatives.
Specializing in special remedial teaching services, psychosocial therapeutic services, and cultural activities, SCC employs a holistic approach to address the diverse needs of children in East Jerusalem. The organization also extends support to families through well-designed empowerment programs. SCC's services have facilitated regular school attendance for many vulnerable children and ensured timely interventions when faced with risks of dropout due to conflicts with Israeli law.
Purpose of the Consultancy
The Consultancy aims to strengthen the capacity of Spafford staff and key school educators to recognize and respond to trauma i among children and families living in conflict zones, with a focus on East Jerusalem. This will be achieved through tailored training program on Trauma-informed Approaches
Objectives
The Training will achieve the following objectives:
Understanding Trauma
Increase awareness of trauma, toxic stress, and complex trauma.
Understand how trauma affects brain development and behavior in children.
Identify signs and symptoms in children, adolescents, and caregivers.
2. Trauma in Conflict-Affected Contexts
Understand effects of chronic political violence and instability.
Explore trauma responses in children living under occupation.
Consider cultural and contextual factors in trauma response.
3. Trauma-Informed Practice Principles
Apply principles such as safety, trust, choice, collaboration, and empowerment.
Create trauma-sensitive environments in schools and centers.
Strengthen adult-child supportive relationships.
4. Practical Strategies and Tools
Use classroom and therapy room techniques to support traumatized children.
Manage behavioral crises and emotional dysregulation.
Introduce resilience-building and psychosocial support tools.
5. Self-Care and Vicarious Trauma
Recognize signs of burnout and secondary traumatic stress.
Promote staff self-care, peer support, and supervision mechanisms.
متطلبات الوظيفة:Scope of Work
The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks:
Hold an initial joint meeting with the MAP team and SCC team to assess specific needs, expectations, and context
Design and deliver one interactive workshop (2 to 3 days (flexible depending on the trainer’s assessment), integrating culturally appropriate and conflict sensitive practices.
Incorporate group supervision sessions, if needed, based on assessed needs.
Develop and submit all training materials, session plans, and tools in advance. Prepare and submit a final report summarizing key findings, activities, participants feedback, and recommendations for future support.
Deliverables
Detailed training session plan and materials tailored to the East Jerusalem context.
Delivery of the trauma-informed approaches workshop (2-3 days).
Group supervision sessions, if possible.
Final report including summary of activities, analysis of feedback, and recommendations for follow up
Duration and Timeframe
Estimated start date: Mid-August 2025
Total duration: 1 month
Estimated level of effort: 4 days for preparation, 3 days for facilitations, 2 days for reporting
Target Audience:
Spafford staff (therapists, counselors, educators) and selected school educators from partner schools in East Jerusalem.
Location
All sessions will take place in Ramallah and /or Jerusalem. Remote training will not be considered, but later support/supervision could be remotely
Required Qualifications
Licensed psychologist or accredited mental health professional.
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience, particularly in supervision, trauma-informed care, or mental health in the Palestinian/ Jerusalem context.
Experience working with community-based organizations or NGOs.
Knowledge of the Palestinian / Jerusalem context and ability to provide culturally competent care.
Fluency in Arabic is required.
