Pathologists – Breast Cancer Diagnostics, West Bank 

Locations: Rafedia Hospital (Nablus) & Alia Hospital (Hebron) 

BACKGROUND: 
Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) is a UK-registered charity that has been reaching out to the Palestinian communities, striving to deliver health and medical care to those worst affected by conflict, occupation, and displacement. MAP provides immediate medical aid to those in need at times of crisis, while also developing local capacity and skills to ensure the long-term development of the Palestinian healthcare system.  MAP’s vision is of a future in which all Palestinians can access an effective, sustainable, and locally led system of healthcare and the full realization of their rights to health and dignity.  

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Palestinian women and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Accurate and timely pathology is critical for early detection, treatment planning, and improved survival outcomes. Pathology departments are central to multidisciplinary breast cancer teams, ensuring precise histopathological diagnosis, prognostic evaluation, and biomarker testing. 

In the West Bank, pathology services face critical challenges: a shortage of trained specialists, delays in reporting, and limited access to immunohistochemistry and biomarker testing. These factors contribute to late diagnoses, treatment delays, and poorer outcomes. 

To address these gaps, MAP will support the placement of two pathologists within the Ministry of Health (MoH) system: one in Rafedia Hospital (Nablus) and one in Alia Hospital (Hebron). These positions aim to strengthen diagnostic capacity, ensure timely and standardized reporting, support multidisciplinary care, and build sustainable local expertise as part of MAP’s broader strategy to improve breast cancer services in Palestine. 

MAIN OBJECTIVE: 
To strengthen breast cancer diagnostic capacity in the West Bank by contracting two pathologists (Nablus and Hebron), ensuring timely, accurate, and standardized pathology services that improve patient outcomes and contribute to sustainable health system strengthening. 

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
Provide accurate, reliable, and timely histopathological diagnoses of breast cancer and related conditions. 
Ensure standardized reporting and adherence to evidence-based international guidelines (e.g., CAP/WHO). 
Contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and support evidence-based treatment planning. 
Build capacity of local pathology departments through mentorship and training. 
Support national efforts in research, data collection, and cancer registry development. 
SCOPE OF WORK / KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Diagnostic Services 

Perform gross examination and histopathological evaluation of breast tissue specimens (biopsies, lumpectomies, mastectomies, lymph nodes, etc.). 
Interpret immunohistochemistry (IHC) and molecular markers (ER, PR, HER2, Ki67, and others as required). 
Ensure quality control in specimen handling, processing, and reporting. 
Deliver reports within agreed turnaround times (TAT). 
Clinical Support 

Participate actively in MDT meetings, providing diagnostic input to guide treatment strategies. 
Provide second-opinion consultations when required. 
Capacity Building & Training 

Mentor and support residents and junior doctors in pathology. 
Contribute to training and knowledge transfer for pathology laboratory technicians. 
Research & Development 

Support data collection and analysis for cancer registries, research studies, and audits. 
Contribute to publications and dissemination of knowledge in breast cancer pathology. 
Quality Assurance 

Implement and adhere to international best practices and evidence-based guidelines. 
Maintain accurate records while ensuring strict confidentiality of patient data. 
DELIVERABLES
In line with international and local practice, each pathologist is expected to handle an average of 30-40 biopsies plus resection specimens for cancer and non-cancer cases per day under the supervision of the head of the pathology departments.  (priority should be given to cancer cases).  
Timely and accurate pathology reports for all breast cancer cases.  
Regular participation and documented contributions in MDT meetings. 
Evidence of mentorship activities and training sessions conducted for residents.  
Contribution to departmental annual review, research outputs, and cancer registry data. 
DURATION & LOCATION
Duration: One year.  (with possible renewal)  
Location: Hebron and Nablus.  
-One pathologist will be hired in Rafedia Hospital -Nablus  

-One pathologist will be hired in Alia hospital in Hebron  

REPORTING & ACCOUNTABILITY
Pathologists will report technically to the Head of the Pathology Department at their assigned hospital. 
They will be programmatically accountable to MAP’s Programme Officer and Medical Programme Manager. 
They will work in close coordination with breast unit teams (oncology, radiology, nursing, and surgery) in Beit Jala, Halhoul, and Rafedia as part of the breast cancer care pathway.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Medical degree with specialization in Pathology.  
Certification/Board eligibility in Pathology (preferred: subspecialty experience in breast pathology).  
Valid license from the Palestinian Ministry of Health  
Minimum 5 years of professional experience in histopathology, including breast cancer cases. 
Proficiency in immunohistochemistry and biomarker interpretation. 
Strong communication and teamwork skills, with experience in multidisciplinary cancer care 
REPORTING AND DOCUMNTATION: 
Submit monthly reports on patient numbers, types of interventions, and progress indicators.  
Document success stories and challenges to inform program development.  
ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS  
Pathologists are required to adhere to MAP and MoH ethical standards, including respect for patient confidentiality, dignity, and rights, as well as compliance with MAP’s safeguarding policy and code of conduct.  Also, the pathologists should complete safeguarding online training via kayaconnect.org and submission of the certificate to MAP.
