الوصف الوظيفي:TERMS OF REFERENCE (TOR)
Clinical Nutritionists – NCD clinics
Northern West Bank (Jenin & Nablus)
BACKGROUND:
Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) is a UK-registered charity that delivers health and medical care to Palestinian communities most affected by conflict, occupation, and displacement. MAP provides immediate medical aid during crises while also building local capacity to strengthen and sustain the Palestinian healthcare system. MAP’s vision is of a future in which all Palestinians can access an effective, sustainable, and locally led healthcare system and fully realize their rights to health and dignity.
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) pose a major public health challenge worldwide, causing over 41 million deaths annually equivalent to 74% of global mortality (WHO, 2023). The burden is particularly severe in low- and middle-income countries, where health systems face constraints in providing preventive and continuous care. In Palestine, the rising prevalence of NCDs—especially cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer—reflects this global trend and is compounded by chronic conflict, poverty, and fragmented healthcare services.
According to the Ministry of Health’s Annual Report (2022), ischemic heart disease accounted for 25.3% of all deaths in the West Bank, while diabetes contributed to 12.8% of total deaths, with incidence increasing in recent years. Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among Palestinian women and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality, largely due to late-stage diagnosis and limited access to timely care. NCD risk factors are widespread: 61.4% of Palestinians are overweight, 31.6% are obese, and 20.5% of adults have raised blood pressure—nearly half of whom (48.2%) are untreated (Palestine STEPS Survey, 2022). Poor dietary habits, sedentary lifestyles, high tobacco use, and psychosocial stress further exacerbate these risks, particularly among women, who often face barriers to accessing care while serving as primary caregivers within households.
To address these pressing needs, MAP will support the salaries of two clinical nutritionists in Ministry of Health NCD clinics in Jenin and Nablus (Northern West Bank). Their role will be to strengthen patient care by providing specialized dietary management, promoting prevention, addressing complications, and improving adherence to treatment plans.
This intervention aligns with MAP’s strategic commitment to strengthening NCD services within the MoH system and complements MAP’s broader NCD programming, including mobile clinics, medication access, and community-based health awareness initiatives.
