Neurologist Trainer for EEG Interpretation in Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
Contracting Organization: Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP)
Location of Assignment: Bethlehem
1. Background:
Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) is a UK-registered charity that works to promote the health and dignity of Palestinians affected by conflict, occupation, and displacement. Our work combines immediate humanitarian assistance with long-term initiatives to strengthen the Palestinian healthcare system.
As part of MAP’s ongoing mental health program in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MOH), we aim to strengthen the clinical skills of staff involved in administering Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). ECT is currently used at Bethlehem Psychiatric Hospital to treat severe psychiatric conditions.
EEG monitoring during ECT is critical for confirming adequate seizure induction, assessing treatment effectiveness, and reducing the risk of complications. However, the current capacity to interpret EEG traces remains limited.
MAP is seeking to engage a neurologist to deliver regular, structured training sessions at Bethlehem Psychiatric Hospital. The training will focus on interpreting EEG traces both in the context of ECT therapy and more broadly, including how to assess seizure adequacy, monitor patient responses, and ensure patient safety.
2. Objectives:
MAP is recruiting a neurologist to:
Deliver weekly in-person EEG interpretation training sessions focused on ECT at Bethlehem Psychiatric Hospital over a period of 10 weeks.
Train 15 doctors and psychiatric residents to accurately interpret EEG activity associated with ECT sessions.
Support clinical teams in improving the safety and effectiveness of ECT administration through enhanced EEG monitoring.
Provide a follow-up supervision period of two months post-training to support practical application.
By the end of the training, participants will be able to independently and accurately interpret EEG traces in ECT settings.
3. Scope of work:
The selected neurologist will be responsible for:
Preparing and delivering weekly 2-hour training sessions for a total period of 10 weeks.
Developing a training plan that includes:
Understanding the role of EEG in ECT therapy and the general understanding of EEG.
Identifying adequate seizure activity.
Interpreting pre- and post-ictal EEG patterns.
Troubleshooting abnormal readings or suboptimal seizures.
Using actual or anonymized EEG recordings from the hospital’s ECT sessions as case material where possible.
Employing interactive and case-based teaching methods.
Conducting one-hour supervision meetings twice a month for two months following the training to support doctors and residents in applying EEG interpretation during ECT and for general understanding of EEG.
Submitting a brief final report detailing:
Training delivery and participation.
Summary of topics covered.
Feedback from participants.
Recommendations for further capacity building.
Recommendations for sustaining skills beyond the project period
